Tennis Starting Basics

Equipment

  • Tennis Racket - $20-$100 (Avoid old wood rackets but look at estate/garage sales)

  • Tennis balls - Can $3.00

  • Tennis shoes $25-$80. Attire can be casual. 

Where To Go

Outdoor courts are in most neighborhoods and free to use as part of public park system Courts are first come basis but if people are waiting you need to quit after completing one set 

When To Play

Courts open all year. Several indoor courts in greater metropolitan area-use internet to find. Most courts indoor courts charge roughly $10-$15 per hour individual and fit you in with group. They also give you rankings subject to your skill level to allow you to compete with like peers. 

Typically people play one set-winner winning 6 games first- this generally takes 30 minutes with warm up 

Finding Partners

Tennis can be played in single games or doubles. If you see someone with a racket and balls, ask them to hit with you. Most cities have parks and recreation programs that arrange group play. Call and inquire. Look up tennis courts on internet. Most also have programs to find you partners.

Low-cost hobby that will last a lifetime, allow you to meet many others and keep you in shape.

Pickleball Starting Basics

Equipment

  • Paddle and balls $25-$200

  • Casual attire usually with tennis shoes 

Where To Go

Many tennis courts indoor and outside have been converted to accommodate pickleball. Cost usually is free outdoors, but many community centers will charge $4-$5 per hour for play. Once you see people playing at one location ask them for other locations nearby or try the internet. 

When To Play

Played all year, weather permitting outdoors. Indoor courts often have set hours so call community centers for hours of play and charges. 

Rules & Regulations

Not overly complicated but easiest to explain by watching a few games in play

Finding Partners

Most pickleball players arrive as singles, place their paddle in a pile with others until the number reaches 4, and when a court opens up, those people get to play and choose sides. Great way to meet new people of all ages and skill levels.
